Blueberry Police Department - Embargo Policy for Press Releases
EMBARGO POLICY FOR PRESS RELEASES
This policy outlines the guidelines and expectations for embargoed press releases issued by the Blueberry Police Department. All members of the media who receive embargoed information are expected to adhere to this policy.
WHAT IS AN EMBARGO?
An embargo is a request by the Blueberry Police Department that information provided to the media not be published or broadcast until a specified date and time. Embargoed information is shared in advance to allow journalists adequate time to prepare accurate and comprehensive coverage.
WHEN EMBARGOES ARE USED
The Blueberry Police Department may issue embargoed press releases for:
Major announcements requiring coordinated release timing
Personnel announcements (promotions, appointments, retirements)
New programs or initiatives with a planned launch date
Joint announcements with other agencies or organizations
Press conferences where advance materials are provided
Sensitive matters requiring careful timing
Events or operations that have not yet occurred
EMBARGO TERMS
All embargoed press releases will clearly state:
That the information is embargoed
The specific date and time the embargo lifts
Any special conditions or restrictions
Example header:
"EMBARGOED UNTIL [DATE] AT [TIME] — NOT FOR PUBLICATION OR BROADCAST BEFORE THIS TIME"
ACCEPTING AN EMBARGO
By receiving and reviewing embargoed material, members of the media agree to:
Not publish, broadcast, or share the information before the embargo lifts
Not share embargoed material with individuals or organizations who have not agreed to the embargo
Not use embargoed information to seek comment or confirmation from other sources before the embargo lifts
Contact the Public Information Officer immediately if there are any questions about the embargo terms
If a media outlet cannot agree to the embargo terms, they should notify the Public Information Officer immediately and refrain from reviewing the embargoed material.
EMBARGO VIOLATIONS
The Blueberry Police Department takes embargo violations seriously. Consequences for violating an embargo may include:
Removal from the department's media distribution list
Exclusion from future embargoed releases
Denial of access to press conferences and media events
Loss of media credentials with the department
Notification to the violating outlet's management
LIFTING AN EMBARGO EARLY
The Blueberry Police Department reserves the right to lift an embargo early if:
The information becomes public through other means
Circumstances change and immediate release is warranted
Public safety concerns require earlier disclosure
If an embargo is lifted early, all media outlets who received the embargoed material will be notified immediately.
BREAKING AN EMBARGO FOR PUBLIC SAFETY
In rare circumstances, if a media outlet believes that embargoed information must be released early due to immediate public safety concerns, they must:
Contact the Public Information Officer immediately before publication
Explain the public safety justification
Allow the department an opportunity to lift the embargo officially
Unilateral decisions to break an embargo without contacting the department will be treated as violations.
